The "HKU Walking Challenge: Around the World" took place during the month of May 2018. The Centre for Sports and Exercise partnered with HKU Global to create a platform to bring together the HKU community (students, staff and alumni) with the common objective of walking together around the world and additionally, with the aims of:
promoting fitness and a healthy body and mind
showcasing HKU’s global presence and activities in teaching & learning, research and knowledge exchange, and
creating a sense of community on campus and around the world through healthy competition.
The Challenge
During our Exercise is Medicine on Campus Month in October 2017 over 25 staff and student teams took part in our walking challenge. In May 2018, with the collective effort of the wider HKU family a new challenge was set to achieve the goal of walking 66,000,000 steps together.
With the combined effort of over 1500 people from 17 countries and regions participating in the HKU "Around the World" Walking Challenge, 463,447,412 steps were completed in one month, which is virtually equivalent to walking 7 times around the world, and more than 7 times the original goal of 66,000,000 steps.
